Like many wetlands on the east coast of Queensland, the
Townsville Town Common is heavily infested with Para grass
which was originally intorduced as a pasture species. In 1970,
cattle were removed from the town common and Para grass
has overtaken large areas of the wetland. In conjuction with
CSIRO and QPWS, BDTNRM is funding a project investigating the use
of fire and grazing for the management of Paragrass in seasonal
wetlands.
