1. 14 – 15 October
Townsville/Thuringowa’s Annual Black-throated finch
count
This year we are aiming to recount at the waterholes that have
proved most successful over the past few years, and broaden our
search to include new waterholes. The survey will be much the same
as last year with a 3 hour survey at each waterhole starting at
6am.
If you can join us again this year please complete the volunteer
registration forms attached to this email and email, mail or fax
back to me at the following address. This will cover you in case of
any injuries received on the day. This needs to be completed and
returned to me before the 14th October.
Please also reply to this email so we know how many counters we
have and can begin allocating people to waterholes. Contact:

2. The Assessment of Dryland Salinity
processes and risk within the Burdekin Catchment
Although dryland salinity is not as prevalent a threat to
natural resource condition in the Burdekin Region as it is in some
parts of southern Australia, some areas of the region store
significant quantities of salt and could become salinised with
inappropriate land use or management practices.
With funding from the National Action Plan for Salinity and
Water Quality, this $500,000 project project aims to identify
dryland salinity priority areas, increase community awareness of
the impacts of dryland salinity and assist communities to adopt
management practices to control dryland salinity.
3. Biodiversity Toolkit for
Queensland's Tropical Rangelands
Funded by the National Action Plan For Salinity and Water
Quality, this $740,000 project will develop and assist in
implementing a biodiversity management and condition assessment
toolkit for the Tropical Rangelands. BDTNRM is collaborating with
CSIRO, Southern Gulf Catchments, Northern Gulf Resource Managment
Group, Desert Channels QLD and Far North QLD NRM.
4. Land and Sea Management Conference for
Cardwell
Girringun Aboriginal Corporation will host the Second National
Indigenous Land and Sea Management Conference in 2007. Indigenous
delegates from Australia and overseas will be discussing the role
of indigenous people in land and sea management. For more
information contact Tonya Booth at BDTNRM
5. Burdekin Solutions
AGM
Burdekin Solutions has just held their AGM attended by 15
members plus visitors. The proposed draft constitution was
presented to the members and was declined by one vote. It was
agreed that the proposed constitution be presented to an
extraordinary meeting to be held in March 2007, on the proviso that
by that time the four partnership panels are established and
operational to the Burdekin Solutions Board’s satisfaction.
Those directors due for re-election, in accordance to the existing
constitution were relelected. The chair, Mike Cannon agreed to
retain his position until March 2007.
