Before embarking on the development of Best Management Practices
(BMPs) for sugar cane farming, an overview of the Burdekin Cane
farming industry was compiled to look at local practices,
environmental issues and farm management research relevant to water
quality and cane farming. This review has served as a technical
starting point for development of farm practice principles to
improve water quality leaving local farms.
Recommended BMPs to improve the quality of water leaving
sugarcane farms in the Burdekin region have now been drafted, in
collaboration with ACTFR and CSIRO. BMPs have been developed with
significant grower consultation and aim to achieve appropriate
social, economic as well as environmental outcomes in final farming
principle definition.
