Theme 2: Threatened species

At least 70 fauna species within the Burdekin Dry Tropics Region are listed as endangered, rare, vulnerable or extinct under the Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992 ( Appendix 1 ). A number of species are also considered to have become locally or regionally extinct (BBIFMAC 1999, Sattler and Williams 1999), and/or are of national significance under Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 ( EPBC Act )( Appendix 3 ).

The region supports local native species such as the nursery frog ( Cophixalus mcdonaldi ) and a leaf-tailed gecko ( Phyllurus amnicola ) found only on Mt. Elliott; the Townsville rock skink found on granite mountains; white-lipped legless lizard and striped-tailed delma from Magnetic Island. It is also home to a number of threatened species including the northern quoll , northern bettong , southern cassowary , southern squatter pigeon , red goshawk , black-throated finch , spectacled flying fox , waterfall frog , Australian lace-lid frog , green turtle , and flatback turtle ( click here for more information on threatened species ).

A large number (>100) of endangered and 'of concern' regional vegetation ecosystems are also recorded within the region (NLWRA 2002). In the southern half of the region most biogeographic subregions have greater than 50% of their regional ecosystems at risk and some (the Upper Belyando Floodout) have greater than 70% of regional ecosystems at risk ( Morgan 2001 ) . Appendix 2 provides a list of endangered and of concern regional ecosystems.

The Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), also lists Threatened Ecological Communities, which for the BDT region include the following endangered communities and Appendix 3 :

The BDTNRM has significant collaborative projects underway to protect endangered species:

Events

Threatened species month will be held in September 2008. Events are designed to raise awareness about Australia's threatened species and incorporates Threatened Species Day (7 September), the anniversary of the death of the last Tasmanian tiger in captivity.
