Burdekin Dry Tropics Region

The Burdekin Dry Tropics covers 138,000 square kilometres, almost 8% of the State.

It extends into marine waters and includes Magnetic Island and the Palm Islands.

The Burdekin Dry Tropics is diverse, with a large agricultural, mining and industrial base.

There are three bioregions including the Einasleigh Uplands, the Desert Uplands and, the Brigalow Belt North.

Townsville, Ayr, Bowen and Charters Towers are the major centres.

Ninety percent of the region’s 190,000 people live in Townsville.

Townsville was founded in 1864 by John Melton Black. It was named after Sydney businessman and Member of Parliament, Captain Robert Towns. Townsville has been a  military base for the Army and RAAF since World War Two. It is a thriving port and the service centre for surrounding rural areas.
